Cruising Transition Stress

IMG_2767The cruising books that do so much to lure you in to the dream of tropical locations, warm waters, sunny skies, for example, do not prepare you for the “emotional impact” of deciding to go cruising.ย  You see, you dream about this for years, then when it is actually happening, the stress of all the transitions run wildly amok at times.

It is “good stress,” but it is stress nonetheless.ย  The change of going from a working career to retirement.ย  The boat buying process.ย  Moving across the country onto the boat.ย  All the myriad of details to take care of- from what to do about the house (rent, sell or something in between), deciding what to bring and will fit on board, leaving loved ones behind,ย  and saying goodbye to the old life, including comfort of living we build and expect everyday. ย  Personally, I am going to miss my master suite bedroom with my corner jacuzzi tub the most.ย  When home, I use it almost every day.

reducing stressEven good stress can affect you in negative ways.ย  We understand that it is transitory, so Joe and I talk about it with each other, discuss how to lower our stress, and then focus on the end goal, which is moving on board and getting the boat ready.

There are certainly positive ways of dealing with this stress, including exercise, sharing your feelings with a loved one, eating healthy, meditation, relaxation exercises, listening to music, or whatever strategy works in your own life.

Discovering that Joe and I were both feeling stressed over the impending life changes, and that most of the cruising books had really glossed over this aspect of the sail cruising lifestyle, I thought I would share that this is something to anticipate if you one day choose to sail off into the sunset, sipping a fruity rum drink as you do.ย  If you plan for cruising transition stress, then when it happens,ย  you will have your relaxation strategies at hand to use.

Thanks for sharing the ups and the downs. I think that stress is part of any major life change — downsizing to a smaller home, dealing with limiting health issues, etc. It would be well for all of us to have a “deal with stress” strategy and make sure the tool kit is ready. Glad you can share your concern with all of us. Makes us all more human.

Hi Mary Helen, thank you for your thoughtful and understanding comment. The cartoon reflects one of my favorite stress busting tools in my tool kit. ๐Ÿ™‚

I too love a soak in a tub to totally release all the stress of the day!! Isn’t there a tub you could take on the boat?? A blow-up one that wouldn’t take much space or add much weight? Every life change is stress inducing…the bigger the change, the higher the stress level (especially if you are like me and are a bit of a control freak!!). This is a huge life change, so you can expect huge stress. Perhaps you could get a book on yoga to take with you and the three of you could do yoga on the deck?? Does someone make freeze-dried wine??? ๐Ÿ™‚ Hang in there, this too shall pass!!

LOL, there’s some really great warn water therapy nearby! I will get to jump into it every day. No bubbles or jets, but lots of ocean scenery. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am actually taking a yoga DVD on board, and will have a fridge and freezer. The stress we both feel at the moment is a normal part of the changes, I know. I just didn’t anticipate feeling as much as I do. I am normally pretty laid back. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for the suggestions and kind words.

Yes, it’s so easy to look at the glossy brochures and get a wee bit lost in the dream…..then awaken to the reality of such a life’s routine altering (albeit wonderful!) decision. Although our change is only for a few months of the year (becoming “Winter Texans”), the questions of how to handle everyday routines in a new location, what to take, etc, etc, etc, has some similarities to your adventure. The transition time will pass and all will settle into a new “norm”. Blessings………….
